Abstract

This article discusses the development and continuity of changes in Islamic educational institutions from the classical period to the modern era. The main focus of this study is to trace the historical dynamics that have shaped the transformation of Islamic educational institutions, beginning with mosques as centers of learning in the early Islamic period, evolving into madrasahs in the medieval era, and later giving rise to pesantren, modern madrasah, and Islamic universities in the contemporary period. Using a historical-descriptive approach, this study examines various primary and secondary sources to understand the internal and external factors driving these changes, including the advancement of knowledge, cultural interactions, colonialism, modernization, and the needs of Muslim societies for relevant education. The findings show that although Islamic educational institutions have undergone changes in form, structure, and curriculum, the fundamental values of Islamic education remain intact and serve as the basis of their continuity. Thus, the transformation of Islamic educational institutions reflects not only their adaptation to the changing times but also the ability of Islam to maintain its identity while responding to global challenges.
